Bougainville weapons disposal exercise finishes

From , 5:02 am on 25 September 2019

The last of the guns handed in as part of the Bougainville weapons disposal programme, will be placed in an armoury today at Panguna.

Eliminating guns from the community is a key consideration ahead of Bougainville's referendum on independence from Papua New Guinea in November.

The Minister for Peace Agreement Implementation, Albert Punghau, told Don Wiseman at a later date the weapons will become part of a monument to mark what the province has gone through in the last 30 years.

Albert Punghau says two groups that didn't unite with all other rebel groups in July to form the Bougainville Veterans are to set up their own gun storage facility.

Damian Koike's Me'ekamui group and Noah Musingku's Kingdom of Papala have committed to the referendum but will store and safeguard guns in their communities.
