Former Kiribati president slams China move

A former president of Kiribati says the country's decision to switch relations from Taiwan to China is outrageous.

The government of President Taneti Maamau announced on Friday that relations were being cut, making it the second Pacific country in a week to switch recognition.

Sir Ieremia Tabai, who is currently an opposition MP, says protest marches are being planned for next week on the main island, Tarawa.

He told Jamie Tahana nobody was consulted about the decision, and no reason has been given by the government.
