Fijian activist expresses experiences of bullying and discrimination in first book

A young Fijian author and activist has used her own experiences of bullying and discrimination in her first children's book titled Kaluti.

Shazia Usman says Kaluti  means black in the Hindi language.

She says it tells the story of a 10-year-old girl who grapples with being bullied due to her skin colour.

Usman says Kaluti is a personal story and she is still trying to make sense of the many labels that continue to taunt her.

Shazia Usman hopes Fijian schools include Kaluti in their reading curriculum.
