Advocates plead for Australia's medevac law to stay

From , 3:03 pm on 29 August 2019

A refugee advocate says the rapidly declining state health of people held by Australia in offshore detention is due to six years of grave neglect by authorities.

David Manne of Refugee Legal was speaking as Australia's Senate conducts an inquiry into a medevac law introduced in March.

The law makes it easier for doctors to order medical evacuation to Australia of sick refugees and asylum seekers held offshore.

Australia's government claims the law has encouraged self harm incidents among inmates looking to escape detention.

Mr Manne told Don Wiseman this claim is baseless.
