Nauru's rugby team is making its debut on the international fifteens stage this weekend.

The first annual edition of the Tier 3 Oceania Rugby Cup kicks off in Port Moresby on Friday.

It will see Nauru take on the likes of Solomon Islands, Niue and hosts Papua New Guinea, who they play at the weekend.

The Nauru coach Dominic Tabuna says their participation in the tournament is the culmination of many years of hard work building the sport locally.

Koroi Hawkins spoke with Mr Tabuna and team manager Godwyn Debao in Brisbane en route to PNG.

Mr Debao said the team was hugely excited.
