Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono visited the Marshall Islands last week, hard on the heels of visits to the region by the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
It's a product of the increasing competition with China to win allies among the US affiliated states in the north Pacific and both Japan and the US have been opening their wallets.
