Tonga govt shelves plans for 'more democracy'

From , 3:04 pm on 2 August 2019

In March Tonga's government was reeling from opposition to its plan to push through six pieces of legislation under urgency.

The legislation revolved around the government taking control of the appointment of judges, the police commissioner and the attorney general, rather than this being done by the King through the Privy Council.

The government push resulted in public petitions to King Tupou VI and an opposition victory to have the legislation go through public consultation.

But it's now August and the once urgent legislation appears to have shelved.

Our correspondent Kalafi Moala told Don Wiseman about the latest developments.
