PNG roading to bring environmental disaster - study

From , 3:01 pm on 29 July 2019

Researchers say Papua New Guinea's ambitious roading plan will bring environmental disaster to the country.

The country plans to nearly double the length of its road network over the next three years, pouring billions into highways in its remote highlands.

But a study published on Wednesday in the scientific journal PLOS One claims much of the new construction will cut into vast rainforests.

Its lead author, Mohammed Alamgir, says the government needs to reconsider the economic, environmental and social risks of roading.

He explained the findings to Mackenzie Smith.
