Aus senator explains Manus Island deportation

From , 3:04 pm on 23 July 2019

An Australian senator was last week deported from Papua New Guinea's Manus Island after trying to visit a refugee detention centre.

The Green party's Nick McKim was on Manus to mark the sixth anniversary of Australia's declaration that asylum seekers arriving by boat would never settle there.

PNG's chief immigration officer, Solomon Kantha, said Mr McKim showed a "flagrant disregard" for the country by trying to enter the camp without approval.

But Mr McKim told our PNG correspondent Melvin Levongo his attempt to seek permission was ignored.
