Presence in Highlands tackling conflict and polio crisis

From , 5:04 am on 22 July 2019

The head of UNICEF in PNG says the 2018 earthquake and the polio crisis have led to a greater presence of the UN in the Highlands region after decades of under resourcing.

David McLoughlin says the massacre of 24 women and children in Tari recently has focussed the need for more conflict resolution and the UN is establishing an active development base in Mendi.

Mr McLoughlin, who is also the acting UN Resident Coordinator, says the UN is now playing an active role to improve access to justice in the Highlands, and there has been exceptional progress in tackling the polio outbreak.

Jenny Meyer asked him how hopeful he feels about helping the Highlands people.

Since the outbreak was confirmed, an army of health workers has been deployed to provide vaccines, which consist of three rounds of droplets.
