The United Nations in Papua New Guinea says it is pinning a lot of hope on the country's new leadership to appoint more judges and police after the killing of 24 people in Hela Province recently.

The head of UNICEF and acting UN Resident Coordinator, says it condemns the brutal massacre, and the targetting of innocent children and women, some of whom were pregnant, is a disturbing low point.

David McLoughlin told Jenny Meyer he has spoken to PNG's Police Minister to encourage him to bring the guilty perpertrators to justice without further escalation of tribal violence.
