French Polynesia will find out in September if the veteran pro-independence leader Oscar Temaru will get his first criminal conviction.

In a widely followed court case in Tahiti, Mr Temaru was accused of an illegal conflict of interest in funding a local radio station.

The prosecutor wants him to be fined $US50,000 while conceding that Mr Temaru is honourable, not corrupt.

Walter Zweifel has been following the case.
