A Solomon Islands academic is calling on his country's government to exercise caution as it considers whether to maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan or switch to China.

Last week amid a whirlwind of diplomatic visits from Australia, New Zealand and the United States the Solomon Islands foreign minister Jeremiah Manele said the government will take its time and ensure it is able to make an informed decision on the issue.

The director of the Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Hawaii Manoa, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka, spoke with Koroi Hawkins about the recent visits and their bearing on Solomon Islands reviewing its relationships with Taiwan and China.
