New Caledonia fails to elect president

From , 3:04 pm on 13 June 2019

New Caledonia is in a political deadlock after the newly chosen government failed to elect a president.

The Congress chose the 11 ministers but they could not agree on who should be the president.

This means that the 11 ministers cannot take office and the old government will remain in a caretaker role until further notice.

Koroi Hawkins asked our colleague Walter Zweifel how this could happen.
