Hou warns his govt about cutting Taiwan ties

From , 3:01 pm on 5 June 2019

The Solomon Islands Planning Minister Rick Hou says his government should be cautious about cutting diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The Solomons has recognised Taiwan for decades but China has intensified its approaches to countries in region and the issue of the relationship was a hot topic during the recent elections with Mr Hou, the then prime minister, suggesting a review.

The United States has warned that an increase in Chinese influence in the region could cause conflict, and Australian and New Zealand government visits to Solomon Islands this week have seen the issue broached again.

But Mr Hou has told Koro Vaka'uta a change in the relationship would not be his preference, although an assessment is being carried out as part of the new government's 100 day plan.
