Pacific culture and language welfare targeted in budget

From , 3:00 pm on 29 May 2019

Challenges faced by Pacific families in New Zealand are being targeted in the budget according to the Minister for Pacific Peoples.

Aupito William Sio says the so-called Wellbeing Budget will enhance Pasifika self-determination.

The Budget coincides with the first official Pacific language week of the year, Le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

Aupito says insights gained through the Lalaga Fou consultations show how important language and culture are to the wellbeing of Pacific communities.

He told Dominic Godfrey recommendations from the Lalaga Fou report have been incorporated into the budget.

But will it help Pacific people who trail in health, education, income and employment statistics?
