Tonga govt says public misunderstands planned reforms

Tonga's government says the public has misunderstood its plans to change the way key appointments are made.

When parliament resumes this week the 'Akilisi Pohiva government wants to push through six key measures, including constitutional changes that would vest appointments such as judges, the police commissioner and attorney general in an agency separate from the Privy Council.

There have been public consultations on the six bills and reports from Tonga say there is strong support for the status quo, but the government spokesman, Lopeti Senituli, told Don Wiseman, the government is working to turn this view around.
