From , 3:00 pm on 22 May 2019

The World Health Organisation has released new guidelines on how to prevent dementia and cognitive decline.

The WHO says people can reduce their risk of dementia by getting regular exercise, not smoking, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, controlling their weight, and eating a healthy diet.

Controlling medical conditions linked to dementia, including hypertension and diabetes, is also part of the recommended interventions.

Jenny Meyer spoke with Samoan lecturer and researcher Fuafiva Fa'alau from Auckland University about the guidelines and her work on New Zealand's Living with Dementia project.
