Norfolk Islander notes a 'democratic deficit' after poll

From , 3:03 pm on 21 May 2019

Norfolk Islanders, many of whom do not consider themselves Australian, voted in the federal election on Saturday - with the island attached to the Canberra seat of Bean.

Norfolk until several years ago enjoyed political and economic autonomy, but has since been incorporated into mainland Australia, or sort of.

It gets a vote in a federal seat, in the ACT, but it has no representation at state level, and the only other level of government is a regional council, which handles the incidental small town requirements, like dog licences.

Peter Christian-Bailey is a Norfolk Islander and Don Wiseman asked him to reflect back on the poll.
