Call for Rotumans to start teaching language in homes

From , 5:02 am on 13 March 2019

Rotumans living in New Zealand have been urged to work together to save their language.

With their culture listed as vulnerable by the United Nation's UNESCO agency, the New Zealand Rotuman Fellowship community launched its language classes in Auckland over the weekend.

Rotuman language teacher Fesaitu Solomone says the community is working closely with the Pacific Education Centre to develop new programmes.

Ms Solomone told Christine Rovoi that in order to save their mother tongue, Rotumans must first teach the language in the home.
