Tongans urged to be alert to fruit fly biosecurity risk

Tongan travellers to New Zealand are being reminded not to bring any fresh produce with them after the facialis fruit fly sparked a biosecurity response in Auckland this month.

A Ministry of Primary Industries spokesperson says two fruit flies from Tonga were caught in traps in February and there are disposal bins and restrictions operating in Otara where the insects were found.

Dr Catherine Duthie spoke to Jenny Meyer about the biosecurity response.
