Indefinite wait for Tonga's international links to be restored

From , 4:04 pm on 23 January 2019

Tonga's ability to communicate internationally was sharply curtailed on Sunday when there was a failure in the country's submarine cable.

The mostly government owned company, Tonga Cable, manages the cable between Tonga and Fiji and says it is unclear when full phone and internet service will be restored.

But a director, Paula Piukala, told Don Wiseman a temporary satellite link is being put in place to provide at least a partial service.

He says there were hopes the Kacific satellite would have been in place on Monday night but more work had to be done to align it.
