Parts of Papua New Guinea's huge Western Province is in drought.

The resident co-ordinator for the United Nations System in PNG, Gianluca Rampolla, says the South Fly is the most affected and has been enduring drought conditions for five months.

He says Western Province was badly affected by the drought of 2015/2016, which occurred during an El Nino weather pattern.

Mr Rampolla says the new drought is not due to the new, developing El Nino which is due to affect the region shortly.

He says that they are working with the National Disaster Centre to send out teams to observe conditions on the ground.

Don Wiseman asked Mr Rampolla whether the people of Sth Fly have lost their gardens.
