On the side lines of this month's APEC summit in Port Moresby Tonga joined the ranks of Pacific nations that have signed up to China's Belt and Road Initiative.

It joins Vanuatu, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Papua New Guinea in backing the initiative.

The multi billion dollar scheme revolves around infrastructure development and the facilitation of trade for those that sign with Beijing.
