This month's election in Fiji was not immune to the increasingly world-wide phenomenon of so-called fake news around polling time. Fiji's authorities made several calls as the election unfolded for people to be wary of fiction masked as news circulating on social media; a PhD student from the Federated States of Micronesia is weaving together a history of Chuuk with the aim to deliver an accurate portrayal of indigenous women; an environmental organisation says the Cook Islands government must focus as much on the potential environmental risks of seabed mining as it does on the economic benefits; but the government says by offering tenders for deep sea exploration, it will be able to assess the environmental risks of extracting minerals from its seabed; and Hawke's Bay apple growers say a looming worker shortage is keeping them up at night, despite more workers from the Pacific being brought in to help.
