Proposed restoration of ABC shortwave for NT welcome news

Advocates for the restoration of ABC shortwave services to the Pacific say the Federal Labour party's proposal to restore the service to the Northern Territory could bode well for the region.

The party announced this week that if elected it will provide the ABC with just under $US1.5 million to help it re-establish shortwave services, which it turned off in January last year, across the Northern Territory.

The co-convener of the group Supporters of Australian Broadcasting in Asia and the Pacific, Jemima Garrett, says the announcement lends weight to the arguement that shortwave is still crucial for keeping remote communities informed.

She spoke with Koroi Hawkins who began by asking who would benefit from a re-establishment of the Northern Territory shortwave service.
