A prominent academic says a new fellowship fund in New Zealand will be important for saving Pacific histories that are at risk of being lost.

The University of Auckland's Toeolesulusulu Damon Salesa says the Judith Binney Fellowship will allow previously untold histories from the South Pacific to be heard.

Judith Binney died in 2011 having spent 40 years weaving New Zealand histories by placing different voices at the heart of the narrative.

Dr Salesa, a former student of Dame Judith's, spoke with Dominic Godfrey about how her legacy will benefit the South Pacific.
