Helen Clark is urging political parties in Solomon Islands to support women who plan to contest the national and provincial elections next year.
Miss Clark is the former head of the UN Development Programme and a former New Zealand Prime Minister.
She has been in Solomon Islands this week, opening a women's summit and speaking on political participation and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Miss Clark told Koroi Hawkins she has been advocating for more party support for women candidates and has so far had positive responses from meetings with the country's prime minister Rick Hou and other political leaders.
