For Ambae evacuees, a reluctant embrace of the unknown

From , 5:03 am on 7 August 2018

Many of the people on Ambae have reluctantly embraced the Vanuatu government's decision to evacuate their home island, as a volcanic eruption there continues to smother the island in ash.

The island is being evacuated again as food supplies dwindle and colour is erased from Ambae by a thick layer of ash that's made it hard for locals to breathe.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation's Nerida Williams has been in Ambae for both evacuations.

She was with a boatload of evacuees as they were taken to the nearby of Maewo at the weekend.

But first, she told Jamie Tahana how much worse it has become on Ambae.
