ANARE VADEI: It's something like some bacterial infection that was the cause of the babies dying that early.
JENNY MEYER: What are you hoping to hear back from the Minister, what sort of response are you hoping to get from her?
AV: I want to get from the Minister, is what the resolution they have got in place. And what strategies they have to, they are putting in place to curb that issue.
JM: Ok so are you concerned that there's a particular problem that is out there in terms of infant wellness at the moment or is this an ongoing issue?
AV: It's a short term issue that needs to be resolved by the Ministry. It's something about their setting up, their environment is not conducive for babies. Because it's near the laundry. So they need to move somewhere that is conducive for the babies to resuscitate and recuperate.
JM: Ok, so you think that there are problems there at the hospital with how they deal with unwell babies?
AV: That's correct.
JM: I can hear you've got a baby there in the background, is that your child?
AV: My grandson, my grandson.
JM: Have people come to you as their MP concerned about this issue?
AV: Yeah, my neighbours, one of them five months, the baby, they died from nebuliser that they use in the hospital. They say that it's infected with the bacteria. So that's why the baby died in my neighbours.
JM: They died from what the?
AV: The use of nebuliser
JM: Oh nebuliser.
AV: Yeah he was five months old.
JM: Did they know that that's what happened or are they concerned that that's what might have happened.
AV: No the instument was still infected with the bacteria and they used it with the baby and little did the officers know that bacterially infected.
JM: Well that doesn't sound very good at all. So have you raised these questions elswhere? Is there some sort of enquiry going on at the hospital about the problem?
AV: Yes, I've raised it with the sub divisional health and hospitals.
JM: And what did they say?
AV: They say that they are under control and they are doing what is best at the moment. And they are trying to resolve all those issues.
JM: So when do you expect to hear back from the Minister of Health?
AV: Oh most probably by the next sitting date, that is next month.
