A New Zealand funded programme to promote healthy lifestyles through sport in Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and the Cook Islands may also help to empower women.

The Pacific Sporting Partnership Programme is funded by the New Zealand government through Rugby and Netball New Zealand.

Netball New Zealand's Ivan Harre says while the partnership's central objective is encouraging participation to reduce non-communicable diseases, it could have other benefits.

He joined the former Silver Ferns coach and player Waimarama Taumaunu in Samoa last week to launch the programme, which he told Ben Robinson Drawbridge is aimed at the grassroots.
