The bodies of three people killed by a massive earthquake in Papua New Guinea have been taken to Mendi hospital in the Southern Highlands.

The chief executive of the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority, Joseph Birisi, says the bodies were brought in after the magnitude 7.5 quake struck the region early on Monday morning.

The government has dispatched disaster management teams amid unconfirmed reports that 10 people were killed by the tremor.

Mr Birisi told Ben Robinson Drawbridge more people are believed to have died in Mendi.
