Regular cancer screening urged in Fiji

Fiji's Ministry of Health says people need to overcome their fear of cancer and realise it can be treated if they go to their doctor early enough.

The National Advisor for Non Communicable Diseases says cancer is a growing problem in Fiji and is a major cause of death behind heart attacks, strokes and diabetes with 1100 new cases of cancer and 700 deaths from the disease every year.

Dr Isimeli Tukana told Jenny Meyer World Cancer Day this week is an opportunity to try and change people's thinking about cancer and reverse the trend of late presentation.

Dr Tukana says life style changes can prevent cancer and high risk behaviours include smoking, poor nutrition, drinking alcohol and lack of exercise.
