Hawaii's Kamehameha Schools has agreed to pay $US80-million to settle a lawsuit by 32 victims of historical sexual assaults by a former psychiatrist.

The case has exposed major failings in the care of students at the prestigious private school whose stated mission is to improve the well being of Hawaiians through education.

The schools were set up by the will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great grand daughter and last direct descendant of King Kamehameha to further education for native Hawaiians.

Sara Vui-Talitu has more.
