58 refugees detained by Australia on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island flew out of Port Moresby on Tuesday for resettlement in the United States.

They left as part of a deal struck between Canberra and Washington in November 2016, for America to take up to 1250 refugees from Australian offshore detention on Manus and Nauru.

130 refugees from Nauru are due to join them next month after a first group of about 50 were resettled in the US last September.

Ben Robinson Drawbridge spoke to Amy Frew from Australia's Human Rights Law Centre after 40 men left PNG on Tuesday morning.
