Manus settlement no protection from future harm

From , 3:04 pm on 8 September 2017

The Human Rights Law Centre in Australia says the settlement reached between the government and its detainees on Manus Island does not protect the men from future harm.

About 1300 current and former detainees out of 1900 who are eligible have registered to share in the $US56 million dollar compensation deal for suffering they endured in the Papua New Guinea detention centre.

But accepting the settlement prevents detainess from suing for future harm, which the centre's Daniel Webb told Ben Robinson Drawbridge is a distinct possibility as the government tears down the centre with 800 men still inside.
