Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Management Office has confirmed there was little damage from the large earthquake in the weekend.

A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck about 50 kilometres off the coast of New Ireland province, at a depth of 103 km, on Saturday night.

The National Disaster Management assistant director Kaigabu Kamnanaya says it's been difficult to get efficient communications with the provincial disaster co-ordinator in New Ireland.
But he told Johnny Blades that people in the area nearest the epicentre have been contacted.
