Business as usual in PNG's mining sector

It's business as usual in Papua New Guinea's mining industry despite the recent trough in global commodity prices.

Activity in the mining sector was central to the remarkable economic growth that PNG enjoyed for almost a decade until 2014.

But in the past two years, PNG's resources boom has tapered off, with the mining industry affected by global currents.

However, a number of significant mining projects being developed in PNG suggest the sector could continue to play a big role in its economy.

Katherine Karaya is the first secretary to PNG's Mining Minister Byron Chan.

She spoke to Johnny Blades who asked her if it was difficult for a mining company to start operating in PNG.
