Fiji's education ministry 'backflips' on teacher gag

From , 3:02 pm on 23 September 2016

Fiji's teachers' union says the Education Ministry has retracted a letter it sent to all schools on Tuesday banning any unapproved speeches and interviews.

The letter from Permanent Secretary Iowane Tiko said all communications with parents, the media and the community had to be formally approved, and written drafts had to be submitted.

The teachers union and shadow minister say it's characteristic of the education ministry's climate of fear.
