American Samoa hotel owes back wages to workers

A major hotel in American Samoa has agreed to pay over $US20,000 in back wages to 89 employees.

US Department of Labor investigators found that Sadie's Hotels improperly deducted costs for required uniforms, causing pay rates to fall below the minimum wage of $US4.50 an hour in the territory's hospitality industry.

Findings also include overtime violations at Sadie's three locations on the main island of Tutulia.

The Labor Department says an employer cannot pay workers for the hours they believe should have been worked but for the hours actually worked.
