The first cargo from Papua New Guinea's major liquefied natural gas project is this week being loaded for shipment to Asia.

Business Advantage reports the Treasurer Patrick Pruaitch saying the gas is being loaded on the Spirit of Hela for markets in China, Japan and Taiwan.

Under the ExxonMobil-led project, an estimated 6.9 million tonnes of LNG will be shipped to Asian markets annually.

Six vessels will carry the gas regularly, according to ExxonMobil PNG Managing Director Peter Graham.
