10:37 am on 28 August 2012

The opening of the 2012 Paralympic Games this week will be an extra special occasion for Solomon Islands, who will be represented at the event for the first time.

Hellen Tasaunga is the Mealesian country's sole athlete in London and will compete in the F57 category women's shot put for wheelchair athletes.

The Solomon Islands Chef de Mission, Casper Pule, says it's a special time.

"Tomorrow we will be having our celebration ceremony, which will be a big deal for us. We just got given our full membership last year and, as part of that, we are entitled to be part of this global game and we were lucky to be given a wildcard."

Eight athletes from sic Pacific countries are competing at the Paralympic Games.
