Sport: Australia and Tonga qualify for 7s World Cup

Australia and Tonga have qualified for next years Sevens World Cup in Moscow.

Australia booked their place after beating defending champions Samoa 12-7 in the final of the Oceania Sevens in Sydney on Sunday.

Tonga recovered from a shock defeat to American Samoa in pool play to edge Cook Islands 19-17 in the playoff for third, which confirmed their world cup spot alongside the region's automatic qualifiers New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa.

Capping a memorable weekend for the Tongans their finish also guaranteed them an invitation to the Wellington, Gold Coast and Hong Kong legs of the upcoming World Sevens Series, with Cook Islands to join them in Hong Kong.
