An Indonesian government official was shot dead in Papua, near the border with Papua New Guinea, at the weekend.

The Jakarta Globe reports police saying the head of the forestry agency in Papua's Sarmi district, 50 year old Ayub Natanubun, was shot by an unidentified gunman.

He was driving his car at the time.

It is the latest in a recent series of violent incidents in the restive region.

Last month, three people, including an Indonesian soldier, were found stabbed to death in the Paniai district of Papua.
