US considers further militarisation of Guam

US military planners are to consider adding bombers and attack submarines as part of a growing US focus on security in the Asia-Pacific.

A senior Defense Department official says the US will have another look at increasing its presence in the strategic hub of Guam.

The deputy assistant secretary of defense for plans, Robert Scher, told lawmakers this follows a recommendation by an independent review of US regional military plans.

But he says the Defense Department must weigh the issue from a broad global perspective and take into account competing requirements.

The US Air Force operates from Guam's Andersen Air Force Base, which hosts a rotational unit of B-52 bombers.

The major U.S. Navy presence includes a squadron of three attack submarines.
