American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono wants to have a private company run the LBJ hospital should the Fono approve his proposal to transfer the medical facility under the Executive Branch.
The governor told a joint session of the Fono he is in discussions with a company owned by Samoans who have experience in running hospital operations.
He said the company would pay their own salaries, leaving the hospital budget for operations.
Togiola said if the Fono approves the bill dissolving the semi-autonomous hospital, he would seek the Fono's approval to have the company take over operations of LBJ.
He said they're still discussing details of the plan and will provide the Fono with more information at a later time.
But should the Fono reject the legislation, Togiola said his administration will look into appointing an entirely new board of directors to run the hospital.
