Tonga speaker pleads not guilty to ammunition charge

2:26 pm on 27 January 2012

The Speaker of Parliament in Tonga, Lord Lasike, has pleaded not guilty to one count of illegally possessing ammunition.

Lord Lasike re-appeared in court this morning and agreed to be judged by a jury.

He's due to appear in the Supreme Court again on February 10th.

His bail conditions have been extended, banning him from overseas travel and requiring him to notify the court if going to the outer islands.

In November, Lord Lasike broke his bail conditions when he hopped off a parliamentary trip to Israel and stayed in the US to get married.

Lord Lasike has maintained his position as Speaker of the House which is due to re-open on Tuesday.
