Sport: Weightlifting a boost for PNG and Fiji

The first day of the weightlifting competition at the Pacific Games has been greatly rewarding for Papua New Guinea and Fiji in New Caledonia

Papua New Guinea collected eight gold while Fiji snared 6 gold medals

Nauru also profited, scoring their second gold medal of the games while the Federated States of Micronesia scored their first gold with lifter Manuel Minginfel winning the men's 62 kilogram class.

Meanwhile New Caledonia added three more gold courtesy of the track and field competition.

Elsewhere Papua New Guinea's Betty Burea triumphed in the women's triple jump while Samoa picked up their third gold medal of the 2011 Games courtesy of discus thrower Margaret Satupai.

While the weightlifting continues today will also see the first appearance of judo and archery.
