New Caledonia's Congress has been called to meet on Friday to elect a new Congress president after the French supreme court ruled last month that Roch Wamytan's election was invalid.
Observers say the sitting is expected to be busy as the Congress is also due to approve a supplementary budget.
The Congress is also due to look at setting up a special commission to draft social and economic accords.
This reflects a demand by unions alarmed at the high cost of living.
The unions had earlier called for another demonstration and a general strike on August the 26th - the day the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, is due in Noumea for the opening of the Pacific Games.
However they're reconsidering their planned action amid fears that there could be violence.
