CNMI eyed in uniform production plan

Businessmen from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are looking into the possibility of supplying US military uniforms manufactured on Saipan.

The businessmen and their associates, including Pacific Financial's Ed Camacho and Martin Manglona, met the acting governor Eloy S. Inos to discuss their plans.

A lawmaker Ray Basa says Saipan is an ideal place for manufacturing US uniforms given the island's experience with producing clothes for global brands, it being a US territory and less than an hour away from Guam.

He also says the CNMI has a lower minimum wage than Guam.

The territory's garment industry used to produce for labels such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Gap and Levi's but abuse of workers led to its demise.
